Comparative Analysis of Senior Secondary Schools Science Teachers and Students Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices to Global Warming in Kwara State, Nigeria

Abstracts

This study seeks to compare the senior secondary school science teachers and students' knowledge, attitudes and practices to global warming in Kwara State, Nigeria. The descriptive research design of the ex post factor research method was adopted in this study. Simple random technique was used to select the participants. The instruments used for data collection include: Knowledge test on global warming (KTGW), Attitudes to global warming questionnaire (AGWQ) and Practices related to global warming questionnaire (PRGWQ). Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, mean, percentages, standard deviation as well as T-test and Analysis of Variance. The findings revealed that science teacher had significantly higher knowledge of global warming than the students. Also, science teachers obtained significantly higher attitude mean score than the students. Based on these findings, recommendations were made for more awareness campaign on global warming to be organized in our schools and colleges by the government and environmental NGO's (e.g Friends of the earth). Also, since global warming is an interdisciplinary in nature, visual materials such as documentaries, photographs, power point presentations, films, graphics, concepts maps, computer and television images should be used when teaching topics related to global warming.
